Baccalaureate Ceremony
The spark that lit the passion for
promoting academic excellence
occurred when Jason II received an
acceptance in December of his senior
year in high school offering him a seat
at "his dream school."
His efforts in rigorous academic
classrooms in Hillsborough County
earned him a new address two weeks
before September 11, 2001: 35 Fifth
Ave. New York, New York.

I have witnessed sufficient evidence to conclude that urban communities have youth who can
become competitive applicants to America's Best Colleges and graduate in four years or less
no matter where they go to college. Most of the young people below journeyed through public
schools in Tampa Bay and Hillsborough County. Along the way, they shared insights about
how students from underserved communities can successfully navigate a complex and
oftentimes challenging public education system.
